Hi, if you're looking for an adventure in Okinawa, we can wholeheartedly recommend Bamboo on Hateruma. My girlfriend and I spent two months there, and it was the best time of our lives! We helped with work in the restaurant, hotel, and garden. It was light and enjoyable work, more like fun! The most important thing is that the restaurant owners and staff welcomed us like family! It was wonderful to be a part of the daily life of the local community.
Every day, we all shared a big dinner together, spending time talking and having fun (not knowing Japanese didn't hinder us at all). Our host mom even gave us Japanese lessons! She also organized various trips for us, like fishing in the ocean with a local fisherman or stargazing with a guide. We also had access to a car and bikes.
The beauty of Hateruma Island, combined with the warm hospitality of Bamboo, made this the greatest adventure of our lives. The beach, just a short walk from Bamboo, is stunning, and the food is exceptional. With all the amenities they provide, like beach chairs, inflatable rings, and swimming gear, you can fully enjoy the seaside. This place offers a unique blend of relaxation and excitement, making it a perfect getaway. We can't recommend it enough!

Karou-san and her family are amazing hosts! They are all extremely kind and hospital people. I spent one week on Hateruma, and I enjoyed every moment on the beautiful island. I got to meet other families and their children, took walks along the beautiful beaches and around the island, and chatted with Kaoru-san's family and others on the island. Kaoru-san brings you to experience and participate in local community activities, and it was wonderful playing with the kids and getting to know the locals.
Tacchi-san is an amazing chef, on top of being a really fun person to be around, and I consider myself incredibly lucky to have enjoyed his cooking! He also brought me to walk and feed the family goat.
Kaoru-san speaks perfect English, having spent much time in Australia, and she takes great care of you! She actively suggests activities to do on the island, and brings you to meet other locals.
Anyone who visits Japan should visit Kaoru-san and her family in Hateruma, you definitely won't regret it! If you're hesitating, just reach out to Kaoru-san and ask about the homestay, and you will see what a warm and friendly person she is and how much beautiful nature and fun activities there are to do!

I cannot express how thankful I am to Kaorusan, Taachisan, Georgiechan and all the beautiful staff at Bamboo for welcoming me into their life. I could not have chosen a better host! I stayed with Kaoru for one month and I wish I could have stayed longer! I will definitely be back! Kaorusan was very generous with her time, helping me practice Japanese and going to izakayas together. I got to go help out in the restaurant at Bamboo, go to local festivals (I even danced in one), play local volleyball, go fishing etc). I made some great friends at Bamboo, who I will be meeting again in Osaka and Tokyo. Bamboo is 2 minutes walk to Nishihama beach, which has the most beautiful blue water called Hateruma Blue! You can swim with sea turtles and tropical fish everyday. The night sky is also spectacular! The food at Bamboo is delicious and I even learnt how to make some Japanese dishes. Thank you Kaorusan! Staying at Bamboo has been the highlight of my time in Japan. I look forward to seeing you in Australia!
If you want to home-stay in Okinawa this is the best place to do it!

Kaoru (who speaks perfect English) and her husband Tachii were so welcoming and helpful. We stayed at their little restaurant Bamboo which is literally a 3-minute walk to a beautiful beach with the most amazing snorkeling, so many turtles and seas life. The food was also amazing and Kaoru spent so much time with us trying to teach us Japanese. We still have a lot of study to do but feel like we learned a lot. We had the BEST experience and feel like we are all family now. We miss them lots and look forward to seeing them all again soon!!
If you have the chance to get down to this most amazing and remote part of Japan do not hesitate you will love it!!!
